Mountain biking around Athens - Enduro style
So, you’ve been in Greece, drew the sunshine in, enjoyed the beaches and the parties, wandered among the ancient heritage, your sight has drifted on the distant mountain ranges as the tourist-laden ship parted the harbor. But probably, you haven’t seen nor tasted the trails. Mostly dry throughout the year, those hidden gems are a pity not to be a part of your vacation or short trip.
Athens 1-4 days riding: Sightseeing/special activity day can be added as an option. From May to mid-October (depending on your comfort level) a swimming day at the mediterranean shore can be arranged. You can start with a single day out around Athens, which could cost you as low as € 55 per person for a 4 people group (see table below) for a 6 hour ride along with some sightseeing and shuttling from your hotel. No meals or lodging included.
Temperatures: 0-15 Celsius in the winter and 20-35 Celsius in the summer months.
• Imittos: Imittos(1026 alt.) is an everyday paradise 20 minutes from the centre of Athens. It is the nearest mountain to the city of Athens and directly connected with the history of the ancient city. According to the findings and historical resources, sanctuaries and temples were founded in this region during the ancient times. There is an abundance of trails suitablefor hiking and mountain biking. Mountain bike trails range from every day trail riding to freeride/DH tracks. The site offers amphitheatrical views to the city of Athens, Piraeus, Salamina islands and the mountains of Parnitha and Penteli. What is more, a perfect mountain bike day can end with a pint under Acropolis or even better to the hidden little Greek taverns in the city centre.
• Parnitha: Parnitha is the highest mountain of Attica (1.413 meters alt) and the nearest national forest to a city in Europe. There you can find few mountainr chalets to enjoy your coffee, your meal or even a stay for a night in the wild. The ancient fir forest, shelters the infamous red deers of Parnitha and offers spectacular view to the regions neighbouring Athens. A vast network of trails offer routes both for hiking and mountain biking to be enjoyed from amatuers and experienced nature lovers, lasting from a couple of hours to a full day out excursion and from a casual trail riding or hiking to a hardcore enduro mtb or DH sessions. 3) Kouvaras: Kouvaras is a small village in the east side of Attika surrounded by 7 magnificent pine tree hills. Although it is only 40 minutes from the center of Athens this area is quite remote offering a great spot for inobtrusive and unhindered mountain biking. The routes here are addressed to all levels of mountain bikers and you can enjoy a couple of hours trail or enduro riding. The amazing thing with Kouvaras is that it can be combined with a 30mins drive to the nearby cape Sounio, site of the legendary ancient temple of Poseidon. The rock of Sounion, where the ancient Athenian King Aegeas flung himself into the sea, widens to a magnificent view to Saronikos gulf, while a revitalizing swim in the “Athenian Riviera” shores can be enjoyed, under the temple’s shadow.
• For groups of 5 and more riders, one-day riding costs euro 60 per person, including some riding skills tutoring.
• For groups of 5 and more riders requiring 2-3 days of trail riding and sightseeing around Athens, please inquire, rates begin from euro 50/per day including transfers and uplifts.
• For 7 days, 6 nights including transfers from airport, one uplift per day, full accommodation with half board, prices for a group of 5-10 riders is euro 800 per person
• For 4-5 days of mixed riding and itinerary, please inquire.
