Sport day at Evia Island
We take the ferry from the port of Rafina at 08:30am. and sail to the picturesque harbour of Marmari, where we expect to arrive at 09:30.
After a brief tour of the harbour we depart for Agios Dimitrios and Kaliani villages, which are located on the south-eastern side of Evia island and from there head for Lenosaious, a deserted village of amazing beauty.
From there we will start our crossing of the Demosaris gorge. The route is truly beautiful and it takes us along the river bed and through thick vegetation all the way to the coast. This route was the traditional way used by locals to get from the Aegean Sea to the seaside town of Karystos before the coastal road was constructed.
Using mules for purposes of transporting goods, they would follow the riverside path and would emerge on the crest of Mount Ochi, before descending to the village of Myloi and eventually Karystos.
The cobbled paving that once characterised the route still survives in a few locations. On our way down we shall walk past a few waterfalls which are arguably the most interesting part of the trek. Following a very pleasant walk of 4-5 hours we shall reach the Agean Sea where we shall enjoy a refreshing swim.
At 16:00pm we shall return to Agios Dimitrios village in order to have a late lunch in a traditional tavern, and at 19:00pm we shall return to Marmari and take the ferry back to Rafina.
Alternatively, once we get to the village of Agios Dimitrios we can descend into the impressive gorge of Agios Dimitrios. The trail moves quite high and is maintained in good condition.
After about 4 hours we will reach the beach of Agios Dimitrios for relaxing and swimming in the clear waters of the Aegean Sea.
