Caves and castles of PELOPONNESE

First day:

Pick up service from the “Eleftherios Venizelos Airport of Athens” and bus transportation to the place of residence, the picturesque village of “Kardamyli”, 35 km south of Kalamata.

Distance from Athens, approx. 230 km. Trip duration: 3,5 hours.

Check in at the Hotel. Rest of the afternoon free.

Dinner in a traditional tavern of the area.

Second day:

Sightseeing in the old neighborhood of Kardamyli, where the 1821 revolution for independence started. Two-hour march in the region, following ancient trails, with beautiful views down to the Messinian bay, where man’s presence is strong from ancient times until today. We will cross Hellenistic tombs, fountains and churches.

Swim at the magnificent beach of Kalogria and lunch in a traditional tavern close by.

Afternoon visit of a lacustrine cave, the lake of which is being impressively illuminated by the sunlight.

Third day:

Transportation by car to the mountain village of Prastio. One-hour trail hiking to Saidona at the foot of southern “Taygetos”. Saidona is the last village before the virgin forest of the Royal Road from where the troops of the ancient Spartans were passing during the Messenian Wars . Visit by car of the local monuments - "Tower of Kitriniaris" and "Monastery Voidenitsa" -and short walk in the woods .

Transfer by car, in the hospitable “Tower of Papastathi" in Saidona, where we will participate in a traditional meal prepared with local ingredients, especially for our group .

Lecture on caving and cave conservation. Afternoon coffee and presentation of caving techniques in the Tower. Optional, training in the techniques of vertical caving.

Back to Kardamyli . Free evening.

Fourth day:

Departure by car to Mani. Visit of the picturesque seaside village of Limeni and the small town of Aeropoli. Guided visit of the lacustrine cave of “Dyros” by boat. The cave of Dyros, is one of the most important in Europe, with an incredible speleological decoration and findings from humans and animals. Visit of the "Neolithic museum of Dyros". Lunch at a local restaurant with traditional dishes.

Afternoon visit of the "castle Kelefas" in Oitilo and return to Kardamyli. Free evening.

Fifth day:

Car transportation to the mountainous village of Laggada . Two-hour trail hiking up to the well hidden village of “Trahila” where, whoever wishes so, can have lunch.

Afternoon tour of Trahila and transportation to an impressive rocky location where the cave "Katafygi (refuge) of Selinitsa” is located. Visit of the cave with helmets and flashlights, accompanied by a speleologist. The cave is one of the longest in Greece and has large rooms and spectacular stalagmites.

Farewell dinner at a restaurant in Kardamyli.

Sixth day:

Back to “Athens”. On our way, visit of the castle of “Zarnata”. Whoever wishes to get a snack, can take advantage of this stop. Arrival in Athens and check-in in a central 4 * hotel. Guided visit of the "archaeological site of Acropolis" and the homonymous "Museum". Then, stroll around "Plaka", the old neighbourhood of Athens at the foot of the Acropolis hill and dinner at a nearby restaurant.

Seventh day:

Morning free to further explore the city. Departure from the hotel to the airport Eleftherios Venizelos three hours before the scheduled flight departure time.
